Dali and his bread penny loafers

bread-shoeI was chatting with indy filmaker Mike Lewis last week at Studio Backstage on the subject of  what at the time seemed to be incoherent and bizarre Dada influenced offshoots of the pre-war period. The list included Robert Johnson and Franz Kafka. Both made artistic contributions that seemed to follow no given genre existing at the time.( ifound the photo on this blog)

Mike recounted that Dali was curious about Dadaist art yet harbored total disdain for what he preceived was a lack of intellectual rigeur. He was invited to meet some Dadaists at a café and just to ensure that he was the biggest narcissist there he presented himself in pair of shoes made of bread to show that the movement was useless. Of course he was wealthy at this time and wanted to lord it over poor artists whenever the opportunity arose.
