bang up business: harvesting the sheep

What if the messiah came? In the blink of an eyes as they say. The Holy Temple in Jerusalem will be rebuilt and Israel will live free among the nations, and will have no need to defend herself; War will be a thing of the past, famine and disease will end an everyone will play nicely in this era of peace and prosperity that will take over. In the meantime, the arrival has been delayed, and in many quarters, such as the arms industry, there is an petition circulating that it be outright cancelled, remanded to some indeterminate future date to be decided sometime and somewhere. Perhaps, as Kafka said, “the Messiah will come only when he is no longer necessary.” In the meantime, while killing time, industries such as armaments do not seem in the least bit worried about a messianic era approaching…

( see link at end) …The arms trade is dominated by the five permanent members of the UN Security Council: China, France, Russia, UK and the US, along with Germany and, increasingly, Israel. However, aside from the US, the relative importance of the others depends on what is being studied and who’s studying it.There are two main ways of looking at arms transfer figures: actual deliveries or export orders placed. “Deliveries” are a clearer measure, but “orders”, while less concrete, indicate the likely volume of future deliveries.

CAAT uses two main sources for international arms trade figures: the US Congressional Research Service, (which uses non-public US Government data) and the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI, which uses public sources but does not include components or services).Read More:

…Israel has an extensive arms industry and is competing with France over the position of fourth global biggest arms exporter (after the US, Russia and Germany).Israeli export sales accounted for about 80 percent of its defence industrial capacity, about $7.3 billion in 2010. The largest private Israeli defense industry is Elbit Systems. Stop the Wall – the Grassroots Palestinian Separation Wall Campaign – has written has written a critical factsheet on Elbit.

The largest state companies are Israel Military Industry (IMI), Israel Aerospace Industry (IAI) and Rafael Advanced Defense Systems. IAI is about to be (partly) privatized.

The system, which was deployed in southern Israel earlier this year, immediately proved its mettle on its first try, successfully intercepting several salvos of rockets fired by Palestinian militants in Gaza at Israeli towns and communities. Local analysts, however, said that the true value of the defense export isn't the sector's direct contribution to Israel's economy. The main benefit is the role defense contractors play in developing technology and producing skilled personnel that will join the country's high tech industry after finishing their military services. FOUR FACTORS Maj.-Gen. (retired) Giora Eiland of the Israel Defense Forces ( IDF) told Xinhua that the defense industry is essential to Israel not only because of the huge export revenue, but also for its contribution to the Jewish state's armed forces. Eiland listed four underlying reasons for Israeli defense industry's success. "It begins with the importance of domestic development and production," he said. Eiland added that since the need to develop advanced weapons is essential to Israel, "at the end of the day we can use and sell it to others."---

Dependence on EU export…

Despite its rapid growth and extreme assertiveness

rael’s arms industry is completely dependent on the co-operation of the EU and NATO. 75% of Israeli arms sales are to foreign militaries. Israel sees Europe as a major market. Without an export possibility into this protected marked, without access to NATO standards, without access to research results, Israel’s arms industry would be much less profitable.

EU imports of weapons from Israel often take place in the form of joint venture production with European partner companies.

By buying Israeli weapons, Europe supports the Israeli military industry. “We rely on our local industry to provide the most advanced and innovative technologies to meet security needs” a senior Israeli defence official was quoted in Defense News “and these needs cannot be met without extraordinary success in the world market.” Read More:

However, the ripple effect of the technologies and personnel that start out in the arms industry before moving on to civilian companies is very important. "From the point of the national economy it's not so important - it only accounts for three percent of Israel's GDP. But it is important as a source of technologies that are later implemented in the civilian high-tech industry," Lifshitz said.---

Maimonides: Rich and poor, strong and weak, will still exist. However it will be very easy for people to make a living, and with very little effort they will be able to accomplish very much…. it will be a time when the number of wise men will increase…war shall not exist, and nation shall no longer lift up sword against nation…. The Messianic age will be highlighted by a community of the righteous and dominated by goodness and wisdom. It will be ruled by the Messiah, a righteous and honest king, outstanding in wisdom, and close to God. Do not think that the ways of the world or the laws of nature will change, this is not true. The world will continue as it is. The prophet Isaiah predicted “The wolf shall live with the sheep, the leopard shall lie down with the kid.” This, however, is merely allegory, meaning that the Jews will live safely, even with the formerly wicked nations. All nations will return to the true religion [monotheism, although not necessarily Judaism] and will no longer steal or oppress… Read More:
