Mechanics Alive! The Cabaret Mechanical Theatre.Its a whole world of kinetic art; of Pinnochio’s coming to life. The referenced blog at the end of he article is a great source for this art form. They are mechanical sculptures called automata, presented as short theatre pieces. There is a great deal of conceptual work and execution as well as creating a story or narrative to accompany the pieces which are works of art. Its all powered by tiny cranks, pulleys and gears which which permit the sculptures to move and take action. Its all very unique. Part recalls puppet master Ronnie Burkett and others traces go back to Jean Tinguely and his kinetic art, Alexander Caldwell and Niki de Saint Phalle. What’s impressive is the near staggering production of new sculptures and exhibitions.
