get by with a little help from their friends

What would you do if we sang out of tune?  … the press release for Whole World Band. Its a new idea that may solidify into mayonnaise yet. We shall see. It remains whetehr the creative genius of founder Kevin Godley with co-founder Andy Wood can make hay with this new interactive idea. The flip side is it descending into a nightmare format for faded glories as articulated in by Godley/Gouldman on the GG06 Beautiful Loser.com song. since the concept does somewhat accentuate the cult of celebrity that permeates and defines, mediates and regulates the communal lives of many. Its the kind of project that may take a different and unexpected direction after it is launched through appropriation and innovation in unforeseen ways. Also, the idea has been in slow development for a number of years, giving it something of an orphan image, wild and as responsible as the Wild Child of Aveyron. Also, technologies change and concepts can be easily copied….

Former 10CC and Godley & Crème man Kevin Godley and Andy Wood of Hypergallery and Cubic Motion fame are offering a sneak peak of their WholeWorldBand at the Music Show in the RDS on February 25 and 26.

A revolutionary new interactive tool for iPhone 4/4s and iPad2, the App lets you create music with other musicians and music fans around the world in both sound and pictures.

“WholeWorldBand is a revolutionary new online music tool that provides a new platform for distribution while offering the opportunity of new revenue streams for up and coming and established musicians and bands and, in fact, anyone,” enthuses Godley who’s been a regular Music Show attendee over the past few years.

…“In WholeWorldBand, musicians can upload their own original tracks and earn money when other users download and share them. The more performances that are downloaded, the more musicians can earn.”

“It’s fantastic that The Music Show is the first place that people will get to see this great project in action,” Hot Press editor Niall Stokes said. “Kevin Godley is a real visionary – exactly the kind of ambitious genius to carry off something special like the WholeWorldBand idea. And he has found the perfect partner for his grand scheme in Andy Wood, who founded Hypergallery as a portal where you can buy all the great cover artwork. Between them, they have created an app that has amazing long term potential. People will see just how much at The Music Show. It is a really exciting development that we’re proud to be part of.”…

ADDENDUM:

August 2nd-

— Quote —Much tail chasing ensued, getting ready to demonstrate Whole World Band- the crowd-sourced global band concept by our old pal Kevin Godley. It’s main incarnation will be web-based but we had talked about the possibility of performing it live during the show – for the purposes of this rehearsal we asked crew members in the stadium to help out. Given that there are over 400 of us, I figured I could rustle up at least a dozen people who could play an instrument or two. This we did and recorded a series of different musical parts to the song.

He then talks a lot about how difficult it was, before concluding;

— Quote — Tonight was a bit of a tough one as it became apparent that the Whole World Band idea isn’t going to work for the show. Happily, it seems very likely that the idea will re-emerge in its web-based capacity so all is not lost, but I’ll confess to being sad that we can’t follow through with the live event. You can’t win ‘em all.

The audio of the TTTYAATW rehearsal, incidentally, is dominated by Bono requesting that some people ‘come in’ now, introducing various people- “This is X from Amsterdam, he put up his part in the last few days…. Sharon from New York…” followed by various instruments coming in. Indeed, in part of the song, someone else sings a line with Bono. He then asks for local talent- suggesting that they may get some-one up on-stage to play?

So it looks as though the ‘Whole World Band’ was essentially a plan for people to record various instrumental parts of TTTYAATW and put them online which would then be played as part of the song live- (Hence a cross between ‘Party Girl’ where they traditionally bring a fan on-stage to play, and the ‘Video Confessional’ showing fans talking) a pretty ambitious plan. It was then dropped due to sheer complexity. But what do you think? Should they have perservered with it? Should the song come back without it? Since they seem to be reviving songs from Achtung Baby and this one was rehearsed last year, who knows if it could return in some form- but should it?
