Is this the one where A-Rod (famously) sticks his foot in his mouth? Yup. Note: This is shortly after then-Texas Rangers owner Tom Hicks signed Rodriguez to a then-record shattering (and still embarrassing) 10-year, $252M contract. Once again, the Yankees, Red Sox, et. al. may have the biggest payrolls, but it’s the so-called smaller market clubs that go nuts and sign players over value. Of course, that doesn’t explain the Yankees bettering the contract when A-Rod “renegotiated” in 2007 after using a Rangers-negotiated opt-out clause.
