Driving A Rubik Cube

The complexity of urban life. Its tensions and  frustrations are an apt metaphor for  the Rubik Cube. The solution to the puzzle, for the uninitiated could be termed a very delayed gratification in a world of instant rewards. It took a year for British mathematician David Singmaster to crack the code in 1978 and he was a renown expert on mechanical puzzles. He devised a number of solutions, some sequences with as little as 25-30 movements of the cube.

The product was originally titled the ”Magic Cube” which the Ideal Toy company felt was not appropriate and the production delay and packaging issues allowed contraband copies to appear simultaneously with the original as demand was peaking. Citroen’s creative appropriation of the product concept to create brand identity is in a similar vein to Honda and the Rube Goldberg hommage with the ”Cog” commercial in 2003.( see previous post) The tenet of problem-reaction-solution and the imagery in the ad is akin to driving as resemblance to a pay ride in an amusement park or the consumer as a component of a gambling machine in a casino.
