Slovakova and the Art of Making Do

London based Slovakian artist Maria Slovakova has always impressed me with the pesistence in which she has pursued her artistic vision.I had the opportunity to meet her when she was in Canada at the beginning of the millenium. At the time Maria could simply not fathom what was to her an almost grotesque consumption of  unnecessary art supplies by decorative art teachers and students. She simply made do with a few brushes and whatever paint she could find and created on surfaces ranging from metal to brick to wood. The maturity and complexity of her work is becoming more distinct with time.
