ok, i gotta ask. what the hell is this thing? after the humor and fun had with the new romney/ryan rolls royce logo this week, i began to really look at this thing (again). it’s apparently the official LOGO for the romney campaign. he really loves it, too. it shows up all over the place looking just like this – no additional typography or anything. it’s as if they’ve decided in their corporate mindthink that it has now been ‘established’ and has become part of the ‘vernacular dialog’. i expect to see it used in this isolated “bug” way more and more as the campaign lurches and staggers along…
my partner, maire, and i discussed this ‘thing’ this morning. for a long time, i’ve wondered what the designer was thinking here. if this is supposed to be some sort of image of some sort, what is it supposed to be? after trying and trying (and TRYING) to spot some sort of profile or face or object or pattern here, i finally decided it represented a simple ribbon. that’s the best i could do. after over a year of thinking about it, i have virtually bupkis. a ribbon.
maire on the other hand was able to matrix this image (in her mind) into an actual abstract profile of a “puny hu-man.” i asked her to walk me through it because i tried and tried (and TRIED) and just couldn’t ‘see’ it. she started this way, “well, that big round part of the “R”? that’s a head. the narrow part is a neck. now, think like the ‘pbs’ logo. – only red white and blue.” ok. i ‘see’ her point of view now. and all i can say, that’s even worse. that is one of the crummiest ‘hu-man’ profiles designs i’ve ever seen. yeesh.
ok, folks. i give up. what is it? can anybody out there tell me what this design actually says? if graphic design is a language form, what is he saying?
ps – please note, that romney’s website doesn’t give out hi-res copies of it’s logo to the unwashed public (like you and me). this is the best i could find, and i did some lengthy searching. the only better one i could find had a big “watermark” in it making the image almost unusuable. so, he REALLY values and protects this thing almost as much as rolls royce protects and values THEIR logo. it’s almost corporate in spirit, yaknowhatimean, vern?
…great piece of machinery, all right. worked like a charm until you got it off the lot… how about that gremlin?!? now THAT’s a CAR!…so, i guess the bottom line here is that nobody really can figure this out, either. but, i’ll bet he got this CHEAP!!…
